If you need a quick escape from Milan, Varenna is my absolute favorite. Just about an hour away by train, this village is a breath of fresh air. Colored houses, cobbled streets, and the beauty of Lake Como make it the perfect spot to relax.
Getting There
Hop on the train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino — it’s a straight shot that takes just over an hour. From the station, the lake is only a short, lovely walk away. Autumn is actually one of the best times to visit — the air is crisp, the colors are beautiful, and there are far fewer tourists compared to summer. Just try to skip the weekends if you can; it gets a bit busier with locals doing day trips. Also, go for an earlier train and get to the station ahead of time — even in the off-season, those morning trains can fill up quickly!
Botanical Garden of Villa Monastero
Take a walk through the gardens at Villa Monastero — they sit right along the lake and are perfect spot for a beautiful walk. In autumn, the paths are quiet, the colors warm, and the views are beautiful from every angle. After November, the gardens turn into a little Christmas wonderland with lights, decorations, and even a spot where you can write a letter to Santa. It feels straight out of a cozy winter movie.
